For almost 38 years Sergio Aguilera, a native of Mexico, pursued two careers: banking and diplomacy. With BA and MA degrees in International Relations he joined Banco Nacional de Mexico (BANAMEX), the largest commercial bank in Mexico, right out of college. His banking career spanned over 20 years and several countries as he became successively VP and General Manager of the Los Angeles, New York and London branches of the bank. Later he worked for Banca Serfin, the third largest commercial bank of Mexico at the time, where he became Senior Vice President of the bank and head of the International Area.
In the Mexican Foreign Service he was successively Consul General of Mexico in Toronto, Canada, Sydney, Australia, and Shanghai, China, prior to coming to Indianapolis in 2002, where he opened the Mexican Consulate that today continues to serve Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Southern Illinois. In 2007 he retired from the Foreign Service and became a resident and later a naturalized citizen of the United States.
Presently Sergio lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Lori Efroymson Aguilera, and devotes most of his time to volunteer work for nonprofit organizations. He has served on more than a dozen boards. He was the founder of the Mexican Scholarship Fund, and was also a founding member of the Consular Corps of Indianapolis, the Sagamore Institute of Policy Research, and the Immigrant Welcome Center. Currently he sits on the board of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, serves on the Indiana Education Roundtable, and chairs the Mexican Scholarship Fund. He joined the Board of Advisors of IUPUI in 2012.
